There’s only one thing better than going on a camping trip with your spouse or friends and that’s going on a camping trip with the whole family! Vacationing with your kids can put a new level of excitement on the trip and using an RV can make the experience more relaxing and convenient. This may not seem like a good idea to some, since destinations like the moon or Europe aren’t exactly feasible, but involving your kids in the planning process can really make them feel like they have more control over the process and help you find ideas that the rest of your family will actually enjoy. Of course, you’ll need to step in and organize or scale down some of their choices. After all, you’re going to be the one driving and there’s only so much time you can take off of work, but consider asking your kids what they’re interested in; where they want to go, what they want to see, and what they want to do. They can help you pick the final destination or some fun pit stops along the way. Think of it this way: the more they do, the less decision making you’ll have to do.
Another great way they can help is by doing their own packing. If your children are a little younger, then maybe you should give them a hand, but as they get older they’ll become more aware of what they need for day-to-day life on the road. They might even enjoy getting to pick out their supplies and clothes for the trip. If you think they’ll need a little help, you can always provide a list of essentials so you don’t find yourself making last minute (and unnecessary) trips to the store. And maybe a gentle reminder that there’s limited space in the RV would be beneficial.
One of your main responsibilities is making sure your kids have all the space they’ll need to stay happy and comfortable. At the very least, you’ll want to make sure everyone has a place to sleep. If you and your spouse are going to occupy the primary bed, make sure there are other sleeping arrangements for your children. This may mean looking for RV models that come with fold-out furniture, bunks, and even a second private bedroom.
With each additional sleeping space you need, the rigs you look at will get bigger and bigger. But maybe the bare minimum isn’t quite big enough. After all, one rainy afternoon and you’ll all be cooped up inside and you’ll want to ask yourself whether or not your RV is prepared to accommodate all those people. Think about how you can maximize your space, either through different layouts or slide-outs or even a little reorganizing of your supplies. Giving everyone a little elbow room can keep your family from going stir crazy when it’s time to step inside.
At the end of the day, you’ll know what’s best for your family and what things will make your next road trip more entertaining. And don’t forget that this is a vacation for you, too! Try to enjoy yourself as much as your kids are enjoying their time, rather than spending the entire trip fretting over everyone else.
