Thinking about how to get the family away from the daily grind this summer? Travel trailer camping can be a great way to accomplish this and we want you to be able to enjoy all the best parts of it so you can make the most of every trip. But if you’ve never done this kind of traveling before, then keep in mind that it’s not quite like other methods of traveling. There are unique concerns that you’ll want to address before you hit the road. There are a lot of benefits to planning certain things ahead of time, which can be annoying for those who prefer to just drop everything they’re doing and hit the road. There are times when this is fun, but sometimes a little planning can go a long way (plus, children generally need a little more structure, even if they claim they don’t).
One such benefit is being able to book your campsite ahead of time. During camping season, most campgrounds will be much busier than they normally are. It’s possible that there will be some open spots if you ask for one at the last minute, but to ensure you don’t wind up roaming around in the middle of the night, you’ll want to place some reservations ahead of time.
Planning ahead can also help you figure out where you’re going to be on any given day. Even a rough itinerary and route that’s highly flexible can help you anticipate weather concerns, search for fun things to see and do, and help you meal plan.
Another reason to plan ahead is that it gives you some time to budget. You should expect to be dropping a lot of money on this trip, but you’ll want to make sure it doesn’t put you back too many steps, financially speaking. Think about some of the necessary spending, like campground fees, gas, food, and entrance fees for any attractions you may visit. You’ll also want to set aside an emergency fund. Budgeting ahead of time can let you know if you need to adjust expectations for your trip. Your priority is making sure you can get home, so if at any point during the trip you suddenly find your burning through your budget faster than expected, consider either drastically adjusting your spending habits or heading home early.
Packing might already be causing you a little stress. Packing for a travel trailer trip is much different from most other kinds of road trips. You’re essentially transporting a small house around so you’ll need gear to run a small house. But you can’t pack too much because you’re limited in ways of space. To find the perfect balance, we recommend keeping track of all the items you use on a daily basis. This should range from food to linens to cooking supplies to clothes. This will probably give you a gigantic list, but from there it’s easy to cross things out. If that doesn’t seem to be working for you, consider checking out one of the many RV apps if you have a smartphone. These can come with a plethora of great features, but they can also come with packing lists, both blank and pregenerated to help you get started.
